Sustaining Peace
12-13 November 2019
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The Sustaining Peace agenda shifts our understanding of peacebuilding from a post conflict set of activities to a proactive, nationally-led, process of building resilient communities, that leaves no one behind.
Sustaining peace is a “goal” and a “process” that aims to prevent “the outbreak, escalation, continuation and recurrence of conflict”. With the end of the Master Roadmap of Practical Steps to Silence the Guns in Africa by 2020 and the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) Roadmap (2016-2020) approaching, and in the leadup to the 15th anniversary of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture (PBA), this workshop will take stock of the shifting peacebuilding landscape in Africa, as a result of the ever changing nature of conflict and other threats to peace, security and development. It will evaluate the progress made and the challenges facing the AU’s post conflict reconstruction and development, as well as the UN peacebuilding, efforts with a view to contributing to the 2020 review of the PBA and the ongoing reforms, in both the AU and UN. It will also inform the design and implementation of new and innovative programs across the peace continuum, that leverages the complementary mandates and expertise of peace, security and development actors.
